Anima Terra by Yves Béhar

Yves Béhar; Art Institute of Chicago

With the opening of the new modern wing at the chicago art institute, Yves Béhar is presenting the commissioned ‘Anima Terra’, a sculptural landscape internally illuminated by LED’s. This work is a collaboration with Samsung, and the latest in a series of laboratory projects.

As a continuation of his experimental lighting work using LED’s, ‘Anima Terra’ (latin for living earth, or living landscape), is a sculptural topographic surface made of thin layers of formed metal that are individually and invisibly lit from within to enable a range of inner lighting expressions. These expressions are inspired by natural phenomena, like the changing light from dawn to dusk, like a living landscape that changes over time, ‘anima terra’ uses LED technology to evoke and celebrate the animating ‘inner glow’ – both natural and artificial – that is everywhere in the world around us. - designboom

Works by Helen Musselwhite

Helen Musselwhite

By the use of bold colour, strong graphic line and familiar images I create highly individual and visually appealing pieces of art that make an instant impact. My work has a distinctive hand crafted quality that pays respect to all forms of mid century design, folk and ethnic art, as well as current and future trends.

Each piece combines the hand cutting, folding and scoring of a wide range of papers and card that are further worked on to create patterned and textured surfaces. They are then used to build scenes in box frames which are often complex and consist of many layers. This process means that each item of work is truly individual with no two pieces the same.Influenced by the natural world each piece is manipulated to become an intriguing place, a glimpse into another world of fiction and fairytale.

Each piece of work is handmade in my studio in the North West of the U.K.

Urban Camouflage: IKEA

IKEA are the master of disguises. In the showrooms they make every space functional, every sized living room seems livable, and the exit seems just around the corner. They also make the meatballs and hotdogs quite palatable, pure Scandinavian witchcraft.

These photographs/installations/sculptures perhaps highlight the feeling of an insignificant consumer when traversing across their cavernous halls.

according to the artists:

“urban camouflage deals with the question how to camouflage oneself and one’s identity in the urban space. our costumes are inspired by the «ghillie suits», the military camouflage suit. It was an adventure to wear the suit in the stores because of the conflicts with the employees, the reaction of the customers and also to see the pretty well camouflage effect in a real situation.”
